Writing…![]() We learned about mining our writing this week. Students revisited some earlier writing to look for hidden jewels…ideas that surface upon re-reading and thinking about our writing. Students took this work very seriously and came upon some new learning about themselves as well as their opinions about different topics. We learned that this can be a great strategy for finding topic ideas for our writing which will help in developing thesis statements. Language…![]() 4th graders in 4W have been exploring different types of figurative language. We are learning to identify them and explain the meaning that is intended behind the words and phrases we find. Next we will be looking at how we can skillfully use them in our own writing as a way of expressing ourselves clearly and creatively! ASK YOUR CHILD TO SHARE WHAT THEY KNOW ABOUT: Similes Metaphors Idioms Hyperbole Onomatopoeia Personification ![]() Students spent this week's Internet Workshop time brushing up on some grammar review. Students worked through a menu of activities and games built around their individual needs. Topics included parts of speech, capitalization, various types of punctuation, types of sentences, and figurative language. Each student ended their time with exploring the Wonder of the Day on Wonderopolis. If you have not had a chance to check out this interesting site, click here. Math…![]() In math we are wrapping up Unit 6 which covered division, measuring angles, and work with coordinate grids. Each class is testing at some point in the coming week over this material. Beginning Monday, students will be moving into a study of fractions, decimals and percents. Are you familiar with Study Jams? This is an excellent site with interactive tutorials and videos which cover a range of topics in math and science. They have been a big hit when I have used them in class and may be helpful for review of material at home. Don't forget to check out my Math Page if you are looking for additional resources to help your child at home! Notice and Note! I introduced students to the Again and Again signpost this past week with the reading of The Giving Tree. We had a great discussion. These little folks are getting so good at reading closely! Ask your child to share about this with you! Below is a Prezi I found that I thought may be helpful for parents. It gives a quick overview of each of the signposts students are learning to recognize in the reading of literature. Just as a recap: A signpost is a point in a text that demands the reader pause and reflect----notice and take note. The more students notice, the more they use strategies for comprehension such as visualizing, predicting, questioning, making connections, clarifying, inferring, and summarizing
